‘Learn, grow and share’ during National Reconciliation Week

RESOURCES and energy employers have another five days left to get involved in an important week in Australian history – National Reconciliation Week.

Commencing on Sunday (27 May) and running until next Sunday 3 June, National Reconciliation week gives all Australians an opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories.

This year’s theme – “Don’t Keep History A Mystery: Learn. Share. Grow” – centres on ‘knowledge sharing’ to help us grow as a nation.

It focuses on exploring the history hidden just beneath the surface, ready and waiting to be uncovered.

The campaign highlights some of the lesser known aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, histories, cultures, and achievements, to prompt Australians to ask themselves: what are some of the things I don’t know about our shared history?

Reconciliation Australia CEO Karen Mundine said National Reconciliation Week would raise awareness of the fact that historical acceptance is key to reconciliation.

“It’s essential that we know each other, and that we share an understanding of the history that has shaped the relationship between wider Australia and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as it stands today,” she said.

“Only by acknowledging, accepting and addressing our shared history can we become a more just and equitable Australia.”

The dates of National Reconciliation Week commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
